Breaking news . . . Batman plays soccer!

I bet you never thought you’d hear this, but Batman plays soccer! That’s right, you heard it here first! Okay, maybe not Batman himself, but a self-professed fan who believes he’s Batman, and happens to be a professional soccer player.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang plays for German football league the Borussia Dortmund. That’s a mouthful, I know, but just roll with it. He’s a top lever player in his league with the most goals scored this season, and as of Monday, that number is 14.

Monday’s morning game against their rival Schalke marked his 14th goal which helped win them the game. All of this is wonderful and great, but why are you reading about soccer news on here? It was the players’ reaction to his goal that we’re interested in. Take a look at the following photo:

The backstory is that Aubameyang is a HUGE Batman fan, so after scoring his 14th goal for the season, he stripped off his jersey (a big no-no by league rules) to reveal a shirt with the Batman logo and the words, “do you remember?” on the bottom. Granted the teams’ colors are black and yellow, which matched his caped-crusader-infused shirt—it still didn’t impress the referee who called Aubameyang’s bluff with a yellow card to match his ensemble.

Aubameyang smiled for the cameras with not a care for the blatant disregard to league rules about removing a jersey during a match. But this isn’t the first offence for the bat-lover. His compadre striker Marco Reus shared a moment with Aubmeyang last year as the dynamic duo posed in front of cameras after a goal against their fierce rival Schalke. They donned the masks of none other than Batman and Robin, of course. The pair earned their reputation as a “lethal force” and are credited with much of the club’s success.

While Reus had to miss out on the antics this season due to an injury, Aubemeyang designed the shirt with Reus to expose after he would make a goal against Shalke. Which of course, he did. He dedicated the goal to his injured team mate and to commemorate the pair’s show-stopping game against Schalke last season.

Aubameyang is fabled as being an “explosive player” and one of the “fastest players who has ever played here,” according to the club’s director, Michael Zorc. He certainly flies around like Batman, check out this image we found:

It’s no doubt Aubameyang’s love for soccer, coupled with his belief that he is Batman, is what gives him his tenacious playing style. More power to ya, mate! He even had shoes made with the Batman logo and his name studded in bling, which you can see here. I believe the Batman would be most pleased. Perhaps without the bling though.
