Who was that masked man? Not Green Lantern, apparently

Although rumors continue to fly that Green Lantern may in fact appear in November’s Justice League movie — in the form of a cameo, at least, to set up the Green Lantern Corps film still scheduled for release in 2020 — one actor is distancing himself from the fan-fueled casting call.

Armie Hammer, who starred in the 2013 box-office dud The Lone Ranger  — a critical failure arguably attributable more to Johnny Depp’s portrayal of faithful friend Tonto than Hammer’s depiction of the masked gunman — has been linked to the Hal Jordan role in Corps ever since his name hit the ‘net as one rumored to be on a short list of actors in line to play the emerald gladiator. That list reportedly also included Ryan Reynolds, star of the 2011 GL movie, whose portrayal arguably WAS why that version tanked.

But, Deadpool — so, no worries, Ryan. All is forgiven.

Also on the “wishlist” were Tom Cruise, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bradley Cooper, and Joel McHale. So, basically, everyone in Hollywood except Jack Black, a casting choice most might call ill-conceived, at best, but for whom a script actually was produced.

Hammer was known to lean into the Green Lantern rumor, repeatedly trolling fans with oblique comments on social media implying he may or may not be set to don a lantern ring.

But in a recent interview with Collider, Hammer decided it was time to come clean and back off the green.

“Man, jeez. . .  It was fun for a while and now I’m convinced that everyone’s gonna turn on me so I’m like, ‘Oh shit, slowly backing away,’” he joked.

Pressed by Collider’s Steve Weintraub, during a press day for Hammer’s new film, Free Fire, the almost-Lantern said:

“I have nothing to confirm nor deny. The only talk of me being Green Lantern that I have heard in my life has only come from social media.”

David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes are said to be writing the script for the GL Corps movie, with Goyer also producing alongside executive producers Geoff Johns and Jon Berg.

So, Hammer is backing off the GL trolling. But that hasn’t stopped Superman actor Henry Cavill, who continues to taunt fans via his Instaram account. So, ya never know . . .
