Wonder Woman, the critical and box office success story for Warner Bros. and DC signals a new direction for the DCEU that, to many, is a welcome change from the dark and gritty films of Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman, and Suicide Squad. Geoff Johns, long-time DC creator and recently appointed head of DC Films, spoke briefly at the red carpet premiere of Wonder Woman about the seemingly new direction that the DCEU is taking with respect to its future films.

Speaking in an interview with thewrap.com, Johns talked about how he, and studio head Jon Berg, approach the development of these movies. He stated:

Get to the essence of the character and make the movies fun. Just make sure that the characters are the characters with heart, humor, hope, heroics, and optimism at the base.

Johns comes from a strong background penning DC characters and is the architect of the current run of DC comics under the Rebirth moniker. His approach to storytelling has always been centered on exhibiting the humanity and optimism of the characters he works on from Green Lantern to the Flash. Now that he’s in charge of the movies, fans should expect to see these words hold true and placed front and center in the DCEU movies.

As of now, the structure sets up with Johns reporting to DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson with Jon Berg reporting to Greg Silverman, Warner Bros Studios new Chief Content Officer. This team will influence the next generation of DC movies which Justice League being next on the block. Their influence should also extend toward other upcoming movies such Aquaman, Flash, The Batman, and possibly another Wonder Woman sequel.

The future looks bright for the DCEU and fans couldn’t be more excited.
