Tom King who writes Batman made a recent announcement that his friend Oliver Coipel (who was a Marvel Comics artist), will be joining the team as a cover artist for Batman. His work begins with Batman #32 “War of Jokes and Riddles” and the focus will be on variant covers.

DC Comics has a open-order variant policy that basically means for the more popular books, they will have two variant covers published which in turn allows the retail stores to order the product they want. This will apply to the work that Oliver Coipel is doing for DC. With certain books, DC will make retails purchase a certain volume of standard cover books prior to having access to buy the variant covers but this doesn’t apply to everything.

At San Diego Comic Con earlier this year, Jim Lee in an interview made mention that there was more work planned for Oliver Coipel but didn’t elaborate too much at the time.

“He’s amazing; I’m a huge fan of Olivier,” Lee said. “He’s a fantastic talent, and as much as he wants to do, I think the door is open.”

If you’re wondering, Coipel did produce work for DC previously on Legion of Super-HeroesJSA, and Superman. Over the last ten years he has been well-known for his work over at Marvel with ThorSiege, and The Avengers.
