Recently, the CW’s Supergirl tv show just finished season 3, with an ending that left more questions unanswered than answered for fans of the show. One of the key characters on the show for the last two seasons has been Mon-El (played by Chris Wood), but following the events of the season finale, it appears that he will not be coming back to Supergirl when season 4 begins.

During the season finale, we last see Mon-El traveling to the future with the Legion of Super Heroes so it’s fair to say we won’t be seeing him for a while. Although Mon-El is gone for now that doesn’t mean he won’t continue to exist in the Arrowverse, ready to return someday.

Executive producer Robert Rovner had a few words to say about Mon-El’s exit from the show:

“The plan for Chris was always to have him on the show for two years. We’ve loved telling Mon-El’s story, as well as the story we’ve told for him and Kara. We hope the fans felt that it was a satisfying conclusion.”

One of the other executive producers on the show, Jessica Queller, also had some thoughts on the season finale:

“They both have destinies in different times as heroes. What they did was the sort-of Casablanca decision of putting what’s most important to them — which is saving the world — first. It’s a little bittersweet that one destiny is to be a hero in this time and one’s destiny is to run the Legion in another time, but I think they grew a lot from knowing one another. They have respect for one another, and they have a respect for the decisions they respectively made.”

Although Mon-El is gone for now, he might return someday. Rovner added this last note:

“We love working with Chris, so we’d love to have Mon-El back someday if the story takes us there and if Chris is available.”
