It has been rumored that the Shazam! trailer will debut at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 next month. DC is aiming to make a big splash during this year’s SDCC festivities. It already has the first trailer for James Wan’s Aquaman set to make its grand entrance at Warner Bros.’ Hall H presentation. Patty Jenkins is also expected to show off something new from her sequel Wonder Woman 1984, seeing as the movie formally began production this past week. There may even be other surprises in store for DC fans at the event, given just how many DCEU films are in the works right now.

Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! will hit the scene about four months after Aquaman, meaning that its promotional campaign may get underway before Wan’s superhero film arrives this December. According to the latest rumor on the subject, the first footage from Shazam! will be shown in public along with the Aquaman trailer.

Shazam! revolves around the adventures of Billy Batson (Asher Angel), a boy who can transform into the eponymous superhero by saying the magic word “Shazam!” The playful nature of the movie has already been reflected in the first official Shazam! marketing – an image of Shazam actor Zachary Levi in his costume, slurping on a soda through a straw. That image alone has already begun to spread like wildfire across the Internet.

Sandberg’s film could easily be the most outright comedic DCEU movie yet. As such, its trailer will be a good indicator of the range of tones that DC’s superhero universe can and will embrace, going forward. WB and DC would only further drive that point home by juxtaposing its Shazam! footage with the Aquaman and Wonder Woman 1984 material it’s planning to unveil at SDCC this year. Assuming that’s the plan as rumored, it’s a smart way to keep the DCEU’s good post-Justice League buzz going and start building hype for not only Shazam!, but everything else on the DC film horizon.
