Earlier this year fans got to see their first glimpse of the DC Universe original series, Titans when the first trailer premiered during San Diego Comic-con.

In the trailer Dick Grayson is still Robin, but the most memorable and controversial line in the whole thing made it clear Robin and Batman do not get along.

For fans of the comics and even Batman Animated Series, the iconic duo eventually coming to odds and going their separate ways is a well-known aspect of the mythos. But it goes even further. When Dick Grayson leaves to join the Titans, Batman eventually finds a replacement Robin in the young street kid, Jason Todd. This in turn leads Dick Grayson to give up the mantle of Robin and become Nightwing.

With the upcoming series Titans, it has been well-reported that the Robin leading the Titans would be Dick Grayson. But now news is out that the show will also introduce the Jason Todd character. From the photos it is safe to say the arrival of Jason Todd as Robin is a surprise to Dick Grayson.

Showrunner, Greg Walker gave some insight into Jason Todd’s character in the show:

What I really love about [Jason] as a character is the unbridled sense of self that he has – there’s a lack of… maybe self-awareness, but for sure self-consciousness in terms of how he comports himself and how he moves through the world. He’s completely seemingly unaffected by darkness – he kind of embraces it or walks right through it. He’s a breath of fresh air and that’s what I love about him, he’s got a punk rock, no-holds-barred attitude that’s massively unburdened. There’s a lot of energy that comes with that.

The introduction of Jason Todd marks the first time he has been adapted to live action. And his inclusion can only get fans excited about the potential storylines this series can offer. It can lead to Grayson becoming Nightwing, a new take on the famous Batman storyline, The Death in the Family as well as the introduction to the character, Red Hood.

Titans premieres October 12 on DC Universe.
