Much in the same vein as Arrow and The Flash, the producers of DC Universe’s Swamp Thing have created an original character and cast an A-list actress in the role.

Virginia Madsen, famous for horror film Candyman and voiceover work for both Marvel and DC animated properties, has been cast in the role of Maria Sunderland, the wife of comic book-sourced antagonist Avery Sunderland.

The official character description portrays Maria as a woman who “has traded in her privileged upbringing for the swamps of Marais and when she married local business magnate Avery Sunderland, [but] Avery’s life-long obsession with the swamp has driven a wedge between him and Maria. Her poised existence is shaken further when the return of Abby Arcane reawakens a deep grief over the loss of Maria’s daughter, Shawna, drawing her into the dark supernatural mysteries emerging from the swamp.”

Madsen joins previously announced cast members Crystal Reed, Maria Sten, Jeryl Prescott, and Jennifer Beals. Swamp Thing is scheduled to debut in 2019 on DC Universe streaming service.
