Pennyworth Ends on HBO with Season Three

Pennyworth has officially – and abruptly – ended after three seasons on HBO Max.

Otherwise known as Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler, the series starring Jack Bannon will not be renewed for a fourth season. This comes in light of the unveiled DC Studios plan by James Gunn and Peter Safran, which did not include renewal for the series. It’s 10-episode run on HBO Max concluded this past November after spending two seasons on Epix.

A prequel to the Batman mythos, set in 1960s London, Bannon portrayed a young Alfred Pennyworth, former British SAS soldier who has gone into private security. Further, he found himself in the employ of American billionaire Thomas Wayne, played by Ben Aldridge.

The show deviated from the source material and added layers to what formed the bond between Alfred and the Wayne Family. Tapping into 1960s spy themes, it showed Alfred trying to leave the soldier’s life behind while being pulled into a world of espionage and intrigue. Overall, it sought to establish definitive rationale as to why the Waynes would entrust their only son, Bruce, to the care of a mere butler in the future. The third season began after a five year time jump past the civil war, and at the dawn of a new era of superheroes and villains.

PennyworthAn HBO Max Spokesperson had this to say in light of the cancellation:

While HBO Max is not moving forward with another season of Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler, we are very thankful to creator Bruno Heller and executive producers Matthew Patnick, Danny Cannon and John Stephens, along with Warner Bros. Television, for their brilliant, unique, gripping depiction of the origin of Alfred Pennyworth, one of the most iconic characters in the Batman world.

An incredible blend of action, drama and humor, for three seasons, Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler has taken fans on a mind-bending ride into Alfred’s eccentric world and the beginnings of cutting-edge super heroes and super villains.

No official comment has been given by cast or showrunners at this time. Pennyworth is not alone, however, as both HBO Max series Doom Patrol and Titans are slated for cancellations after their upcoming seasons.
