DC Studios has officially ignited fan excitement with the release of a new teaser for its upcoming Supergirl film, offering the first full on-screen glimpse of Jason Momoa as the infamous DC antihero Lobo. Though brief, the teaser has already made a strong impression, signaling both the tone of the film and the long-anticipated arrival of a character many fans have hoped to see Momoa portray for years.

The teaser opens with a casually menacing image: Momoa stepping out of his trailer, cigar in hand, fully embodying Lobo’s larger-than-life presence. When an off-camera voice asks if he has anything to say about finally playing the character, Momoa responds with a single word — “Finally.” It’s a line that feels as much like an actor’s personal victory as it does an in-character statement. The clip then cuts to a couple of quick scenes featuring Momoa as Lobo, punctuated by the character’s signature, gravelly laugh, offering just enough to confirm that this version of Lobo will lean heavily into his raw charisma and anarchic energy.

Lobo’s casting has been a long-running topic of speculation among DC fans, and Momoa’s involvement feels almost inevitable in hindsight. DC Studios co-head James Gunn underscored that sentiment last year when he reflected on the moment Momoa’s Lobo casting first came into serious discussion. On X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Gunn recalled receiving a text from Momoa on the very day Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as the heads of DC Studios. That exchange marked the first direct conversation about Momoa joining the DC Universe as Lobo — a role Gunn has openly felt was a perfect fit.

“I’ve loved watching Jason bring him to life & can’t wait to share that with all of you,” Gunn wrote, reinforcing the sense that this casting choice has been years in the making. Screenshots of the original text exchange added to the excitement, showing Momoa’s blunt enthusiasm — “fucking LOBO” — and Gunn’s reply that he had been advocating for Momoa in the role for a long time.

Industry confirmation arrived in December 2024, when Deadline reported that Momoa had officially been tapped to play Lobo. The character, created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, is one of DC Comics’ most unapologetically extreme figures. Hailing from the planet Czarnia, Lobo is known for his violent, irreverent personality and near-invincible physiology. With superhuman strength, rapid regenerative abilities, and an almost comical disregard for collateral damage, Lobo often operates as a bounty hunter whose love of chaos rivals his love of destruction. He’s less a traditional hero and more a walking embodiment of mayhem — a role that aligns naturally with Momoa’s physicality and screen presence.

The Supergirl film itself is based on Tom King’s critically acclaimed 2022 comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, illustrated by Bilquis Evely. The story takes a more cosmic and emotionally driven approach to the character of Kara Zor-El, focusing on a galaxy-spanning quest for justice. In the comic, Supergirl teams up with a young alien girl, Ruthye Marye Knoll, who seeks revenge against Krem of the Yellow Hills after he murders her father in cold blood. Their journey blends space opera, moral reckoning, and personal growth, offering a darker and more mature take on Supergirl than audiences may be accustomed to.

Ana Nogueira adapted King’s comic for the screen, preserving its core themes while expanding its cinematic scope. The film stars Milly Alcock in the titular role of Supergirl, with Matthias Schoenaerts portraying Krem of the Yellow Hills and Eve Ridley appearing as Ruthye. The supporting cast includes David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, and Jason Momoa as Lobo, whose presence suggests the film will not shy away from morally complex and unpredictable characters.

Supergirl is currently scheduled to open in theaters on June 26, and the new teaser has only heightened anticipation. While Momoa’s screen time in the clip is minimal, the reaction has been anything but. For fans of DC Comics — and of Lobo in particular — this first look feels like the payoff to years of speculation, fan casting, and creative alignment. If the teaser is any indication, Momoa’s Lobo won’t just be a cameo or novelty appearance, but a fully realized force within DC Studios’ evolving cinematic universe.
