In the first season of Supergirl, we caught small glimpses of a silhouette here and a pair of boots there, but now actor Tyler Hoechlin is here to give fans a face to a name as he joins the cast for the show’s second season as Kara Zor-El’s cousin – the Man of Steel himself, Superman.
Hoechlin will don the cape and blue tights, becoming the first actor to play iconic superhero on the small screen since Tom Welling played a young Clark Kent in Smallville. The actor definitely has the appearance to play the big, blue boyscout – especially around the jawline. Though seeing as how this is such a huge role, one has to wonder if he can bring a certain flair to the character.
Apparently Exectutive Producer Andrew Kreisberg has complete faith in him, and had the following to say about the casting:
“Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”
Kreisberg having confidence in the actor’s ability to portray the characters is rather reassuring, as he was the one who convinced fans that Grant Gustin could embody The Flash and now many fans can’t see anyone but him as the character.
It has also been said the ability to use Superman in the “Arrowverse” is a result of the recent reorganization at Warner Bros. DC’s Trinity – Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman – along with the Suicide Squad and other characters were previously off limits for television properties to use due to plans to use these characters in film. However, it would seem that red tape between divisions has become less restrictive – so perhaps this will open the door for more superheroes to come to The CW that were previously available.
