Welcome to DC Comic News Dynamic Cosplay Presents:
Batgirl
Cosplayer: Katiecosplays
DCN: What made you create this cosplay, why Batgirl?
KC: I wanted to cosplay Batgirl immediately after seeing The Killing Joke at the cinema. I like Batgirl but I’ve always cosplayed the DC bad girls; Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. As a Batman fan I just thought she would be perfect for me and it could be fun to cosplay the good girl sometimes.
DCN: Outside of cosplay do you have any other interest/hobbies?
KC: Outside of cosplay I am a children’s entertainer. You will often find me at parties entertaining dressed as a Disney princess or a superhero, I’m always in some kind of costume. I enjoy sewing, various arts and crafts including painting, going to the cinema, reading graphic novels and keeping active, swimming and bike riding.
DCN: How do your friends and family feel about you cosplaying, are they supportive?
KC: My friends and family are very supportive of me cosplaying. Yes, I am often jokingly referred to as “the weird one” in the family and they don’t quite understand that it’s such a big passion of mine. But my sister Emily has been known to come to a few comicons with me wearing my outfits and she has a great time as well.
DCN: How long have you been cosplaying?
KC: I’ve been cosplaying for 2 years now, which is incredible, it feels much longer as I own over 50 different costumes.
DCN: What was your favorite cosplay project?
KC: I cosplay because I love that I can be anyone that I want to be when I’m in that costume. I can put Katie away for a while and become as silly and crazy as Harley Quinn or interact like a real princess with children as Elsa or Rapunzel. I can be strong and powerful as Wonder Woman and feel proud of the way that I look in the costume, because it’s a look that I have created and put a lot of work into. My favorite cosplay project is actually the one that I’m working on at the moment with my boyfriend “The Dark Knight Cosplays”. We are creating the Arkham Knight Batgirl suit and it is all being made from scratch. We are working really hard on this, everything that’s going into it will be handmade except from the cowl which is from “Zoal Prime Props”. I’m really enjoying building it as we get to spend time together on something that we are both very passionate about.
DCN: How long did it take you to get this costume together?
KC: “The Killing Joke” Batgirl costume actually took me a really long time to piece together. I made the cowl myself from fiberglass and filler but it started from a cardboard box and a pepakura file. It took a whole load of sanding to make it perfectly smooth and in the end I still wasn’t happy with it as I made it too small to fit the wig underneath. But I have learned from my mistakes with that. I painted the belt myself and made the gauntlets also with a pepakura file from foam and my cape was cut and reshaped by White Rose Cosplay, a close friend of mine. I’d say the costume took around 2 months to make in total.
DCN: Do you have a pet peeve when it comes to cosplay?
KC: I do get really upset when I hear so much about cosplay bullying. People picking on others because they say that they can’t cosplay that certain character because of their gender, body size, height, etc. I’m 100% against cosplay bullying and believe that if you want to cosplay a character that you love you should go for it and feel proud doing so. No one should ever put anyone down for doing something that they love, because it takes a lot of confidence to cosplay.
DCN: Do you have any cosplays you will never do and why?
KC: I don’t think you’ll ever see me Cosplaying any Anime characters because its just really not what I’m into.
DCN: Why do you think cosplay has become so popular in the last few years?
KC: I think because the “geek culture” has become way more mainstream now and I think that really has a lot to do with it. Like I started out only Cosplaying Disney characters and went to my first con as Elsa before I knew it I was sucked into a whole world of Marvel and DC characters that I fell in love with.
DCN: Which DC character may we see next from you?
KC: I can’t wait to show everyone my “Arkham Knight” Batgirl, and I will also be Cosplaying a Playboy bunny version of Poison Ivy with the CosplayBunniesUK. We have 15 girls all Cosplaying DC bunnies for London MCM on Saturday so that is very exciting and I cant wait to be a part of it.
DCN: Do you have a favorite memory or story while cosplaying?
KC: I met a beautiful little girl named Daisy, who was 3 years old when I first met her. I was Cosplaying Rapunzel and my friend White Rose Cosplays was Snow white. Daisy very quickly fell in love with her two favorite princesses and followed us around all day at the con holding tightly to both of our hands, it was the sweetest thing. I see Daisy now at every London con that I go to and no matter what I cosplay she always calls me her “Punzel”
