It’s no surprise that most people are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Justice League movie due out in November but many people may not know about another upcoming movie that deals with one of DC’s most iconic characters: Wonder Woman.
For those of you that aren’t familiar with the story behind the creation of Wonder Woman, the character was the brain child of William Moulton Marston, a tenured psychology professor at Harvard University. Moulton was fascinated with discovering the science and psychology behind lies and created the world’s first lie detection machine.
The life of Marston and the creation of Wonder Woman is the subject of a new movie that will be out this upcoming October. The film is called Professor Marston and the Wonder Women and if you’ll notice the title refers to the multiple women in his life that inspired him to create Wonder Woman.
The film is written and directed by Angela Robinson and stars Luke Evans as Moulton Marston with his wife (played by Rebecca Hall) and their lover (Bella Heathcote)…that’s right, their lover.
In the movie, Marston engages in a poly-amorous relationship that was taboo in the 1940’s America (in fact it’s still considered taboo to this day). He created the lie-detector machine with their help and used Wonder Woman to get across his ideas on feminism, acceptance,and open relationships. As you can imagine, Marston was met with criticism behind his relationships as well as the content of the Wonder Woman comic itself.

It is no secret that Marston saw women as very independent and powerful (he was often quoted as referring to women as the stronger sex) and believed that Wonder Woman’s origin as an Amazon was meant to show that women can live without men and can even rise to great positions of power.
When you think about Wonder Woman as a defender of truth and how she uses here lasso to get it out of those she ties up with it, it is quite the revelation to realize how Marston himself was fascinated with ‘Truth’.
Although the movie is still a few weeks away, the buzz since its appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival has been positive for the most part. It’s great to see movies not just about the stories within the pages of comic books, but also about the people and events that led to their creation (if you haven’t seen the documentary With Bill Finger, another great example, please go see that after reading this article).
