The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally come! Well, not exactly but you get the point. The stand-alone Joker origin film starring Joaquin Phoenix has gotten a release date. The origin film is set to hit theatres on October 4th, 2019. The information was released by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow late Wednesday afternoon.
The announcement of the date and title came just as SDCC kicked off in San Diego. Wait…DID WE JUST SAY TITLE?! Yes, we did, there’s an official title too! The stand-alone origin film is simply entitled, Joker. Warner Bros. and DC will take the stage at SDCC on Saturday and will probably have more information for us. We’ll have our fix of DC titles for a few weeks before Wonder Woman 1984 is released on November 1st.
Last month Phoenix finalized the deal to play the Clown Prince of Crime and the studio describes the film as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.” Director Todd Phillips and Scott silver co-wrote the script and Joker‘s budget is much lower than any other superhero film in the $55 million range.
The film is set to begin production later this year and is meant to be darker and more experimental in both tone and content than ever before with DC.
Emma Tillinger Koskoff will produce the film and Richard Baratta as the executive producer. We can’t wait to check this film out!
Do you think it’ll do Joker justice from previous versions? Let us know in the comments!
