Shazam! may be over 8 months away from release, but the filmmakers say they are already planning sequels. Wheels are in motion for the movies of the DC Universe as Walter Hamada tries his hand at managing the DCEU, and Shazam! is moving right along.
The film recent wrapped up production in Toronto earlier this year, and fans are just now seeing images of Zachary Levi in costume with more stills to come. With Zachary Levi as Shazam and Asher Angel as his teenager alter ego Billy Batson, what’s not to love? Fans are eager to see more after only catching a glimpse of a few images and some footage that was quickly taken down, but fear not, as a trailer has been confirmed at San Deigo Comic Con this weekend, but it may be exclusive.
When filmmakers were asked about Shazam! producer Peter Safran said, “We have plans in place for sequels that take into account those realities,” referring specifically to the realities of Billy Batson having to mature quickly as a new superhero. Its not uncommon to be thinking this far ahead, but it sounds like Safran and the other filmmakers are extremely confident that this movie will be a success.
There hasn’t been much more beyond Safran’s comment, but they seem confident in Asher Angel and Zachary Levi, and that’s all I need to hear. These two have a very dynamic relationship to the character, as one is a teenage boy tasked with the overwhelming burden of knowing he can transform into a Superhero, and the other is an adult acting as a teenager in an adults body. Only time will tell how successful Shazam! will truly be.
