Summary

The Earth itself is under attack by aliens of unknown origin! As the Titans continue to evacuate civilians, a long time ally appears with a plan of counter attack! Will the Titans ignore orders from the League and engage the alien threat at last?

Positives

Dan Abnett is still making you feel the absence of Nightwing in this issue. Here we find the entire world has been under attack from an alien threat, and Earth’s very own water has been tainted. With a simple touch humans are turned into aliens themselves! Under orders from the Justice League, the Titans start our story with a simple task–evacuation. However when former member Garth arrives plans quickly change! Garth shows up with a plan of attack that sounds completely insane–one that Miss Martian is completely against. The team as a whole decide that given the dire circumstances, anything is worth a try. The entire issue is told from Donna Troy’s point of view and I enjoyed that probably the most. She shares how emotionally attached she is to the team, her long history with them, and the fact that they’ve seen so much. It probably makes the loss of Roy and Dick that much worse.

Negatives

The team is still without a leader in this issue and it shows. Donna Troy has moments where she steps up to lead, and Garth even reminds her that her leadership is needed now more than ever. In this issue you can sense how unsure she is, but thanks to Garth she puts her fears away and goes to war. Hopefully next issue we’ll see her role as leader become a permanent one–and judging by the ending she may not have a choice in the matter. Another complaint I have is that she hasn’t told the team about the death of Roy Harper, thinking with all the issues going on that the team can’t take another loss. I understand her sentiment, however it seems wrong that she’s denying her team a chance to acknowledge and grieve, and I really think this will come back to haunt her in the future.

Verdict

However Titans #28 is a good read. I enjoyed the entire story from Donna’s point of view and it seems that with the next issue her leadership ability will be tested. While battling the alien threat, it seems that their leader emerges and the Titans make a retreat! As the attempt to boom tube away the coordinates get scrambled sending them to an unknown place! The next issue should be a real baptism of fire for Donna Troy!
