Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor was last scene making a heroic sacrifice in 2017’s Wonder Woman, and yet Diana’s first love has been seen walking around in a 1980s shopping mall in photos from the film’s sequel, WW84.
However, the 38-year-old actor claims prior knowledge to Director Patty Jenkins taking this route to resurrect the WWI pilot that captured the Amazon Princess’s heart by the end of the film. “Patty had told me this idea somewhere in the middle of [the first film]. And when Patty gets an idea, it’s a pretty powerful thing [because] you can see the kernel land in the dirt and then all of a sudden it just starts growing and becomes a tree. You know? She could make you do anything.”
Steve had commandeered Doctor Poison’s plane carrying chemical weapons and shot them in midair, destroying them, the aircraft, and himself. It is unclear how Steve can be in 1984 when, in Justice League, every conversation Diana (Gal Gadot) engages in about Steve talks about him in the past tense. Could that be a clue that this isn’t a genuine resurrection?
Regardless, fans can look forward to this subplot as well as the main conflict between Diana and Barbara Ann Minerva aka The Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig, when WW84 debuts in theaters on its new date of June 20, 2020.
