Just when you thought it was safe to bring out your stuffed unicorns…
Jai Courtney, who portrayed “layered” volatile arch-criminal Digger Harkness aka Captain Boomerang in 2016’s breakout hit Suicide Squad, has announced his return to the role for the James Gunn-led sequel. “We’re getting ready to shoot in a few months, ” Jai confirms. “There’s not much else I can reveal about it but [you’ll] be seeing Boomerang soon.”
To date, Courtney is one of only a few confirmed to reprise their roles from the original film. Margot Robbie has confirmed that she is returning as Harley Quinn, while Will Smith has been replaced by Idris Elba to play Floyd Lawton/Deadshot. While Viola Davis is rumored to return as Task Force X handler Amanda Waller, Carla Delavigne (Enchantress), Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Karen Fukuhara (Katana), and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg) are not expected to return. This feeds into rumors that this film, directed by James Gunn, will be a reboot.
Courtney’s character is one of the Rogues that consistently plague Barry Allen/The Flash in the comics. In fact, it was Ezra Miller’s Flash that busted Digger in the original film prior to the events of the plot.
The official release date for Suicide Squad 2 is August 6, 2021.
