For the past five years, DC fans have been waiting patiently for any news on the announced Batgirl movie. Well, now they have some as it has been announced that the film has found its director, or should I say directors, with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the duo responsible for directing 2020’s Bad Boys for Life. Christina Hodson penned the script for what is being planned as a movie for HBO Max, with Kristin Burr producing.
Not much is known about the film, other than it will follow Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon, as the titular superhero. While there have been many characters in the world of DC Comics to helm the Batgirl cowl, this film will be starting off with the original, and I’m thrilled about this.
Barbara Gordon was a character that many of us wished had made an appearance of some sort in the recent film Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which was also written by Christina Hodson, however that didn’t happen. Will members of the Birds of Prey show up in some way in this film? I truly hope so! I would love to see Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress or Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary pop up to help Barbara out, possibly even leading to another Birds of Prey film.
El Arbi and Fallah come in to replace the original director, Joss Whedon, who stepped off the project back in April 2018, claiming he couldn’t come up with an idea that would fit.
The directing duo most recently helped revamp the Bad Boys franchise with the third installment, Bad Boys for Life. The film was one of the few box-office hits of 2020, coming out right before the pandemic shut down Hollywood, with the film doing major numbers at the worldwide box office.
