A new casting announcement has surfaced recently, reporting that Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones, The Crown) is in talks to play Sinestro in the upcoming Green Lantern series from HBO Max.
If true, Menzies will join Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott and Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner.
The series description of Sinestro makes it clear that the story will focus on the earlier part of Sinestro’s life. He will be shown as one of the greatest Green Lanterns, so it predates when he will become their greatest enemy. However, I’m hoping we will get to see the fall of Sinestro and his creation of the Sinestro Corps.
In the comics, Thaal Sinestro is a former member of the Green Lantern Corps who was dishonorably discharged for abusing his power. He is the archenemy of Hal Jordan and founder of the Sinestro Corps.
The Green Lantern series is being envisioned as an anthology that will see stories of various Lanterns over the decades including Alan Scott, Bree Jarta, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, Guy Gardner, and Sinestro, which sounds absolutely amazing to me. This gives the series the opportunity to showcase these lesser known members of the Green Lantern Corps in a way that will, hopefully, propel them into the forefront of the average viewers’ minds, and perhaps lead them to seek out some comics starring these characters.
This will technically be the third live-action iteration of this character, first portrayed by the late comedian Charlie Callas in the Legends of the Superheroes live-action television specials, and then by Mark Strong in the character’s cinematic debut in the 2011 Ryan Reynolds-led film Green Lantern.
Menzies has starred in numerous series including Game of Thrones as Edmure Tully, and Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh in the third and fourth seasons of Netflix’s The Crown.
No premiere date has been announced yet for the Green Lantern series.
