Blue Beetle may not be a household name at this point, but he has a very loyal fan base. With an estimated release date of August 2023, this could all change rapidly with the character getting his own film.

The movie will feature the third incarnation of the character Jaime Reyes. This version of the hero first appeared back in Infinite Crisis in 2006. Warner Bros has taken the decision to bypass the previous versions (Dan Garret and Ted Kord) to start with the most recent host of the Sacred Scarab.

From Cobras to Beetles

Xolo Maridueña will be playing Blue Beetle. Star of the Netflix series Cobra Kai, the actor will be taking the leap into the DCEU.

In an interview with USA Today, he talked about his next step.

Honestly, it feels like I’ve skipped a few stepping stones, Cobra Kai has been such a wonderful opportunity, (and) it feels a little bit intimidating being this is my first movie and it’s in a realm that’s totally different than anything I’ve ever worked on. I’m nervous, but I’m excited. It’s gonna be important, not only for Latinos and to see people of colour, brown people, represented onscreen, but also show a story that we haven’t really seen before.

Principal photography is expected to start very soon into 2022. We haven’t had the opportunity to get a look at Beetle’s movie costume so far; however, Maridueña has had the chance and told USA Today how pleased he was.

We’ve done two suit fittings, They’re hoping that I get more buff by the time we actually start filming. But I’ve seen the suit, and it looks awesome.

With the DC cinematic universe entering a phase where it would appear to be heading in a new direction, it’s exciting to see characters such as Blue Beetle take center stage and be introduced to an expanded fan base.
