DC Comics Quick Takes for the Week of May 14, 2025

Sometimes, there isn’t enough to say for a complete review, but there is still something to be said. That’s what Quick Takes is about. It would be difficult to review EVERY comic I read in a week, but I’ll always have something to say. So, here’s to something new…Quick Takes for the Week of May 14, 2025. Be sure to comment on what you’re reading and enjoying this week and check out the full reviews for the week at DC Comics News!

Green Lantern Corps #4

This issue has a lot of solid character moments with Simon, Keli, and Guy.  It’s a nice balance between character and action as this issue goes to an interesting locale which provides that action.  Additionally, the story touches the edges of what’s going on in Green Lantern.  It connects nicely while maintaining just enough separateness.  The best thing about this issue is how it takes full advantage of the DC Comics space/ science fiction properties.  Using the deceased Starro as space station of sorts is a total gas!  It really creates the feel of a series like L.E.G.I.O.N. or R.E.B.E.L.S.  While Vril Dox doesn’t show up, it’s not hard to imagine him popping up in this series with a few of his associates.  However, Space Cabbie is due next issue and that’s a really cool deep cut.  Why haven’t those stories been collected anywhere?

Batman and Robin #21

The stories that Phillip Kennedy Johnson has been telling in this series have been great and this issue is no exception.  It goes deeper into Bruce’s mind and explores his actions.  The mystery gets a little clearer in this issue and it’s a surprising development.  I wouldn’t bet against this series.  I can’t recommend this enough.  The relationship between Bruce and Damian is excellent and is well balanced, like all good comics, with action to move the plot forward.  It’s a truly engaging experience and complemented by some great art as well.  I’ve said it before, but this is the Bat-book you SHOULD be reading.

Batman: Dark Patterns #3

Dan Watters does a really nice job with the detective element of Batman.  It doesn’t get used as often as it should, and this issue is a good use of it.  There’s some interesting psychological stuff going on which fits the Ventriloquist quite well.  There’s nothing earth shattering about this issue, but it’s a very, very good Batman comic.  There’s enough here to get someone interested in the characters and the world of Gotham.  Definitely worth your time.
