Sometimes, there isn’t enough to say for a complete review, but there is still something to be said. That’s what Quick Takes is about. It would be difficult to review EVERY comic I read in a week, but I’ll always have something to say. So, here’s to something new…Quick Takes for the Week of May 21, 2025. Batman and Robin: Year One #7

This series continue to be a fun and exciting Batman and Robin story that captures a retro feel while not feeling dated.  The mystery continues to develop as the General begins to explore the Police file on the investigation into Batman’s secret identity.  Chris Samnee’s art echoes the tone of this series perfectly and delivers on great storytelling.  While there’s nothing Earth shattering here, it’s tough to imagine a better comic featuring the Dynamic Duo in their early days as a team!

Nightwing #126

Except for the art by Francesco Francavilla, everything about this issue feels rushed, very rushed.  The interesting mystery that began last month is closed out way too quickly making these two issues feel pointless.  The point Watters wants to make is told to us in a way that feels forced and contrived.  There’s something interesting here that could’ve played out longer and been a lot more effective than a two issue storyline that is paced very poorly between the two issues.  It’s a disappointing use of Francavilla’s art and some of the small details that are nice.

Zatanna #4

It’s fun to see Blue Devil have a role in this series and this issue expands on that just a bit.  Blue Devil is one of those characters that has the potential to have a larger presence and he fits really well with Zatanna. Zatanna herself pulls things together to move things forward as more and more of the magic world of the DC Universe comes into play as well as more references from Zatanna’s past.
