Summary

Superman & Lois 4×02: Lana and Sarah join the fight against Luthor, who starts making moves in Smallville; Jordan and Jonathan butt heads over an important decision.

Positives

As the battle against Doomsday continues in space, Lois gains some comfort in knowing that her father, General Sam Lane, is safe. After being kidnapped by Lex Luthor, Sam was luckily saved by Jordan. Things don’t turn out well afterwards, however, when Superman’s body is returned from space by Doomsday — without his heart. It was gut-wrenching to watch Doomsday casually toss Superman down on the streets of Smallville, with Lois and her boys yelling in horror, and then taking Superman’s heart and leaping away into the air.

The entire town seems to gather around them, but the mayor, Lana, tells people to back away and give Lois a moment, as Superman was a longtime friend to her. This scene really pulled at your heartstrings as you see the entire family surrounding Clark, and they can’t do anything to save him.

Negatives

With so much emotion in this episode, it’s not hard to imagine one of the boys acting out over the loss of Clark. Jordan is the one I’m concerned about the most. His attempt at confronting Luthor goes awry, as the villain indicates that Jordan is out of his depth. It’s this very encounter that leads Lex to realize Superman’s true identity and his connections to Lois. I was so angry at Jordan throughout this episode. Although I understand his intentions, the end result was heartbreaking.

Verdict

Superman & Lois 4×02 was an emotionally charged episode with some serious ramifications. Lois realizes that she might have to consider funeral preparations for Clark; the boys find out that they may have a chance to save their father — although, it’s a risky one; and Lex Luthor is buying property throughout Smallville for an unknown reason. Overall, a great episode with plenty of action and emotionally charged scenes. And last, but certainly not least, I’d like to give a special shoutout to Elizabeth Tulloch and how she portrays Lois’ loss. Her take on this character is probably one of the best interpretations I’ve ever seen.
