The much-anticipated Titans trailer dropped this weekend at San Diego Comic Con 2018, and it surprised more than a few fans with Robin saying, “F*ck Batman.” The line clearly comes after he’s split from his former mentor, and acclaimed comics writer, veteran, and Titans producer Geoff Johns had a lot more to say on this very dark interpretation of Dick Grayson.
“This is after he’s obviously split from Batman if that wasn’t clear enough,” said Johns at IGN’s Comic-con 2018 live show. “There’s a story to be told in the series. Dick Grayson is really trying to find a new place in the world — a new spot, a new life, just like all the other Titans are. They’re all lost, and they find one another to form this surrogate family.”
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, the Teen Titans have been around since the 1960s, but the Titans show largely draws material from the 1980s interpretation by Marv Wolfman and George Perez titled The New Teen Titans. It is a comic acclaimed for character development, storytelling, and expansive universe that John’s called, “for its time, very controversial. It pushed the envelope really really hard, and we wanted to do a show that did the same thing.”
Titans has not yet been given a release date, but is likely to debut sometime this fall. Cast members include Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, Minka Kelly as Dove and Lindsey Gort as Amy Rohrbach.
