One revelation from DC Universe’s debut live stream was that the new Swamp Thing series would pull some of its inspiration from a legendary comic issue: Saga of the Swamp Thing #21, “The Anatomy Lesson.” The 1984 story — by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben — was not only a game changer for the central premise of the series, but is regarded as one of the best Swamp Thing stories ever.
In Moore’s tale, Jason Woodrue (aka, the villainous Floronic Man) is investigating the Swamp Thing when he slowly comes to realize the true nature the creature’s relationship is with Alec Holland.
The streaming project is being co-written by Mark Verheiden (Daredevil) and Gary Dauberman (It), who will serve as showrunners when and if the series gets picked up. The DC Universe service launches September 15th; pending a full series order, Swamp Thing is expected to arrive sometime in 2019.
