You’ve seen the official trailers, and now we finally have the official synopsis. In accordance with a Talenthouse Birds of Prey art contest, the first film’s description has been released:
“You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.”
One of the few remaining properties in the DCEU – aside from Aquaman, Shazam!, and the Wonder Woman franchise – Margot Robbie reprises her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn, and is now joined by Rosie Perez (Renee Montoya), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Huntress), Jurnee Smollet-Bell (Black Canary), and Ella Jay Basco (Cassandra Cain). The main villain, Black Mask, will be played by Doctor Sleep star Ewan MacGregor. Given Cass seemed displaced in the trailer, this description sheds some light on how she fits in. Bereft apparently of her heavy background in the comics, she appeared unrecognizable. Cassandra first appeared during the 1998 “No Man’s Land” event in the Batman comics, and rose to become the second Batgirl with Barbara Gordon serving as mentor. She was also the first Batgirl to have her ongoing solo title. During the DC Rebirth she was rechristened Orphan and appears in Batman and The Outsiders. This is the first live-action portrayal of the character to date.
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is set to premiere in theaters February 7, 2020.
