Summary
“The Dark Princess” most certainly hits hard in the realms. She arrives in fashion and malicious glorious intent, and readers will be here for it. The Realm Knights and High Council thought, after they had taken down The Dark One and his Horde, The Order Of the Tarot, even Merlin and his evil knights, that the battle was won. That all they had to do was clean up the remaining rubble and peace would reign after their arduous fight.Â
Wrong. So wrong.Â
Baba Yaga has been put into her place for the time being, watching this new power take her place. The Dark Princess has made it to the mist, thanks to Yaga, and change is certainly in the wind. She goes straight to work building her army and even gives a hint to not only where she is coming from, but is also adding more lore to the series. The realms will never be the same…
Positives
The story given by Joe Brusha is not only intriguing, but sets a standard for what is to come for the sides of both good and evil. It leaves your jaw agape as the story unfolds. This isn’t the first time that the Realms have dealt with a massive evil. But for a long time fan, seeing Baba Yaga taken down so easily was shocking. Yaga is the queen of the long game, however. It remains to be seen just how that submissive gesture will play out. The team of Julius Abrera, Robby Bevard, and Maxflan Araujo give us stunning artwork and some pretty devastating scenes. Perfection in print.Â
NegativesÂ
It really isn’t needed to grasp what is going on, but you may have to pull older stories in order to get the full scope.
Verdict
This is a super-sized issue to grab if you are a fan of the series. Or even just starting out with the worlds. I know it will lead you down a bit of a rabbit hole, be careful of Dee and Dum, but it really is worth it. What has me excited for what is to come from Zenescope this year is “The Dark Princess” and the cliffhanger is entirely worth it.Â
