The death of Robin – as well as which one – would have been viewed in Zack Snyder’s sequel to Justice League.
Since 2015’s Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, seeing that battle-damaged Robin suit in its encasement, fans have been curious about Robin’s fate. As many fans know, the second Robin, Jason Todd, had been beaten nearly to death by The Joker, then blown up to finish the job. In the Knightmare scene in the recently released Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Jared Leto‘s Joker even alludes to Robin’s murder in his verbal joust with Ben Affleck’s Batman. However, the circumstances would have been very different had Snyder not only released his version years ago and a sequel greenlit. And it was to be revealed in the deliberation over a particular trip for The Fastest Man Alive.
Snyder explains, “So basically in the alternate-future movie, we would have been in this post-Superman, Anti-Life Equation world, where the team knew that the only way to fix the world was to run Flash back and warn Bruce about [Lois.] And so in that world, the movie was basically going to be be about a ragtag group of Justice League members pulling off a crazy mission to steal a Mother Box from this half-destroyed cathedral in Gotham and get it back to the Batcave in order to use it to power the cosmic treadmill to jump Flash back in [time.] And the night before the big mission, they would have this last supper sort of reckoning, where they would tell their stories. One of those stories was Joker telling the story of of the death of Robin.”
Perhaps we would have found out which Robin Joker killed, since it was not established in any of Snyder’s installments if it was Todd, or Bruce’s first protege, Dick Grayson. In any event, this was to be part of Zack’s trilogy plan for the franchise before personal tragedy forced him to pull out of filming. The project, as everyone knows, went to director Joss Whedon, whose version of Justice League was not only panned, but seems like an eviscerated version of the four-hour epic now available on HBOMax and theaters. Snyder also concocted a subplot involving Lois becoming pregnant with Batman’s child after a one night stand, a plot alluded to in a brief scene in the Snyder Cut. Currently there is a #RestoreSnyderVerse movement online that hopes to have the same kind of success as it did bringing Zack back to complete his vision of the inaugural Justice League film. However, sadly, Warners Media has announced it has no intention of restoring the shared universe it killed off after Whedon’s film underperformed theatrically and critically.
