The Dark Knight trilogy is one of the most widely praised Batman adaptations of all time. Other than the voice many people consider Christian Bale to be the most well received incarnation of the iconic character. Since the trilogy came to an end one topic has seemed to take the forefront of most fan debates. Was the final scene where loyal confidante Alfred, played by Michael Cane, see’s Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne sitting together at a cafe a dream or reality? Did the Batwing burn in the explosion or did Batman in fact escape the explosion and find a way to live in peace away from Gotham?
While director Christopher Nolan is well-known for his complex stories that usually keep fans on their toes, the Dark Knight trilogy was pretty straight forward. However that did no keep fans from coming up with all sorts of different theories as to how things would play out for not only the Caped Crusader, but for Joker and Alfred Pennyworth as well.
In a recent interview with SiriusXM Christian Bale and Ridley Scott were promoting Exodus: Gods And Kings. Bale also discussed his thoughts on the ending of The Dark Knight Rises. He was directly asked his opinion on that final scene during the town-hall style Q&A set up by EW.
“[Alfred] was just content with me being alive and [away from the Batman life] because that was always the life that he wanted for him. I find it very interesting and, with most films, I tend to always say it’s what the audience thinks it is. My personal opinion is no, it was not a dream. That was for real and he was just delighted that finally he had freed himself from the privilege but ultimately the burden of being Bruce Wayne.”
