pied piperYoung actor Andy Mientus talks about his upcoming challenge playing the villain Pied Piper in The Flash television series.

Andy Mientus was chosen to play the Pied Piper, a classic Flash villain back in October. The actor expresses his excitement towards the role and the challenge it represents. For those who do not know, the Pied Piper (Hartley Rathaway) is a former member of the Rogues. The character has no superhuman powers, much like Captain Cold or Heatwave, but is as equally as dangerous as them in the usage of special weaponry.  The Piper developed at some point, a sophisticated flute capable of hypnotizing anyone within range of its sound. He can make anyone do what ever he wants of them, and can even make himself ‘invisible’ to the perception of others. It will be amazing to see how his abilities will be portrayed on the show.

Talking about the impact of his character, Mientus said:

“With the gay thing, I feel like I’m representing a whole community”.

“People are excited to see this character, so it is a lot of pressure. But I’m glad they are introducing the character to the show. It’s a huge step forward, and I’m thrilled to help make that happen. It’s awesome.”

He also stated he is more focused to please avid fans of the comics and the show then addressing the character’s sexuality.

According to the character bio for the show, Hartley Rathaway, is a former STAR Labs tech who gains mysterious sonic powers as he loses his hearing. His quest for vengeance against Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) obviously places him in conflict with The Flash (Grant Gustin).

Apparently the actor enjoyed a lot donning the costume of this titular character.

“I can’t put it on and not feel powerful,” he says. “It tells you everything you need to know on how to move and feel like a superhero. It does a lot of the work for you.”

Interestingly enough, the actor auditioned first  for the role of Barry Allen. We are lucky he will still have a chance to show us his acting skills under the Pied Piper role.

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW. The show returns from its midseason hiatus on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
