The final spot on the team roster for the Arrow/Flash spin-off series had been casted!
Actor Franz Drameh has been cast as “Jay Jackson, (The Mystery Hero)” in the Arrow/Flash spin-off series. You can read more about that here.
Jay was described as….
A former high school athlete whose pro career was derailed by injury. Now making ends meet as an auto mechanic, Jay will come to have a surprising affiliation to the Star Labs crew.
But, when the “The Mystery Hero” role was originally announced the description read like this….
Regular, street smart guy who unexpectedly gains powers, and then, as a part of the team, regularly quips about the insanity of the situations.
Early speculation has the hero as Black Lightning, Black Vulcan or Static Shock. The description for “Jay” sounds like it could be Cyborg. But, with a movie in the works it would seem unlikely. The description for “The Mystery Hero” sounds like it could be Static Shock (whose personality was based in part on Marvel’s Spiderman). But again, there is a live action movie being shopped around for that character.
I have a slightly different theory of who the character may be (one with a connection to The Flash).
Jakem John Williams aka Jakem Thunder! Jakem’s first appearance was in The Flash (2nd series)#134.
Jakem’s origin:
Jakem John Williams also known as J.J., was born in Keystone City. Jakeem’s mother left his father while she was still pregnant with the boy, and he was orphaned when his mother died of cancer. His aunt Lashawn was then granted custody, and his father, Phil, never knew about his birth. Jakeem became a self-reliant latchkey kid who grew up on the streets and adopted a tough, foul-mouthed attitude in order to survive. When Johnny Thunder began to lose control over his “genie” Thunderbolt, because of his declining mental health, he put the genie inside an ink pen. Without knowing its danger, Jay Garrick gave the pen to Jakeem. Soon thereafter, the world was threatened by Lkz, a blue genie similar to the Thunderbolt but evil in nature. The Justice League of America and Justice Society of America united to fight the being, whereupon Jakeem discovered that the Thunderbolt actually came from the Fifth Dimension and is controlled by speaking its name (Yz) backwards (“Say You”). Jakeem worked with a small group of JSA members, as they attempted to stay alive while Yz and Lkz battled throughout space. With the assistance of Captain Marvel, Jakeem was able to merge Yz with Lkz, who was controlled by speaking the phrase So CĂ»l (pronounced “so cool”). The pink-hued Yz and the blue-hued Lkz formed a new purple genie named Ylzkz, with this new genie also being controlled by the phrase “so cool.”
Now, I’m not saying they will use the genie aspect of the character but they may give him the powers of Static and just use the Thunder/Thunderbolt name to avoid any conflict with Static. Also, I could see them giving him the catch phrase “so cool” in the series!
Now my other theory
Jay Jackson could be a play on Jay Garrick (the original Flash), but with Kid Flash’s or Impulse’s personality!
Jay Garrick’s origin:
A failed college Football player, Jay Garrick became a research scientist. By accidently inhaling the hyper-charged atoms of a radioactive liquid, Jay gained incredible super speed.
In either case, I think the Flash may be the cause of Jay Jackson’s sudden acquisition of powers, whatever they may be!
With the addition of Drameh the complete cast now consist of: Ray Palmer-Atom (Brandon Routh), Prof. Martin Stein-Firestorm (Victor Garber), Sara Lance-Black Canary (Caity Lotz), Kendra Saunders-Hawkgirl (Ciara RenĂ©e), Richard “Rip” Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and Jay Jackson-Mystery Hero (Franz Drameh).
So, what’s your theory? You can sound off in the comments section below!
