Back in the mid-2000’s, director George Miller was tasked with bringing together DC’s greatest heroes for a full-fledged Justice League movie, title Justice League Mortal.

Justice League Mortal would’ve featured the team’s classic lineup, and it got further along in development than most people realize.  It had director George Miller(Mad Max franchise), a script, and a full cast (including Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Common as Green Lantern and more), but it fell through before it could begin production.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Miller revealed how his film was hastily assembled and how it just as quickly fell apart.

‘Justice League’ was the main one.  That was, oh, seven years ago, I think.  And there was a really great script.  And Warners said, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s do a Justice League.’  I really was attracted to it.  But there was a writers strike looming.  We had to cast it very quickly, which we did with Warner’s casting people.  And we cast it really quickly and we mounted it very quickly.  And it depended on a start date and it depended on some basic rebate legislation that had just got through a new Australian government.  But it was just too big a decision for them to make in the time.  And that fell through and the whole film fell through.  We almost got there.  And it wasn’t to be.  But that happens a lot, where films line up and the stars look like they’re aligning and they didn’t.

Over the past few months, production art created for the film has surfaced online, as well as pictures of Gale in her full Wonder Woman costume.

Instead of hitting theaters around 2009 as originally planned, the first Justice League film will arrive as part of Warner Bros.’ new shared film universe in 2017.  Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher and more, Justice League: Part One hits theaters on November 17, 2017.
