Since the first announcements that Ben Affleck would be playing the Dark Knight there have been many reviews on opposite sides of the spectrum. As an advocate of Affleck as the Caped Crusader I took of flack after declaring my allegiance. It is nice to see that someone so close to the project see eye-to-eye with me. Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder recently spoke to Bloomberg about the casting choice and also a little bit more about his artistic style.
“Not to be drinking my own Kool-Aid, but I think Ben is a pretty good Batman,” he says. “I never liked a small Batman. Ben’s all of 6-foot-4, and in the boots, he’s like 6-foot-6.”
Snyder is known for having a specific vision he wants to depict on-screen. He wants his crew to stay in peak physical condition to meet his “body aesthetic” so they have to go through grueling workouts. Something the cast fondly refers to as “crazy workouts.” And it’s not just the crew that keeps up on a daily workout. Snyder also makes sure he can hold his own on set.
“The way I interact with actors has always been very physical.”
After films such as 300 and Watchmen it is quite clear that Zack Snyder has a very particular eye for not only directing, but for how an action sequence should look and feel. Watchmen took superhero movies to a darker and grittier level. This was the first time fans actually heard crime fighters breaking bones and spilling blood.
“You’re, like, ‘Holy s—!’” Snyder says. “‘That’s legit. That’s what happens in real life when you fight a guy and you’re a superhero.”
In the next couple of months Snyder will begin filming the first Justice League movie that will feature Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Aquaman. He showed the people at Bloomberg his wall sized white board that can be raised or lowered with the push of a button. He says that previously to its clean surface, it was recently covered in action sequences for the upcoming film.
“Everyone freaks out whenever I do that,” Snyder says. “They’re, like, ‘What is this? It’s like the Bat Cave in here.”
Less than a month remains until the premiere of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and the anticipation is running high. Early ticket sales are looking better than expected.
