We all know Suicide Squad was majorly changed from the original version, but that doesn’t stop details from leaking out until there’s nothing left to squeeze out of the cast and crew. Ayer has addressed some of his original plans regarding Joker’s role in the film after questions from fans about images of the Joker seen in the film’s trailer did not make the final cut.
Ayer’s original plans for Joker include an entire subplot between Joker, Harley, and Enchantress that was completely dropped:
“After Joker dropped Harley Quinn from the help and crashed, Enchantress made a deal with him. He was going to take Harley home and be ‘King of Gotham’,” Ayer explained on Twitter. “Harley stood up to him and refused to betray her new friends. The Squad turned on him and he escaped…That was her arc. Growth and empowerment.”
Whoa. That would’ve been pretty interesting to watch and a total Joker move on his part. Ayer also explained how Joker material was dropped from the final cut of the film, explaining that the scriptwriting process in response to reports he had written the film’s script in under a month. If you can write a script in under a month that’s pretty talented if you ask me.
“Spent a heck of a lot more time on it than that,” Ayer said. “There’s an outlining process. I wrote the first draft. There were several major rewrites after that. Plus continually rewritten pages as we designed the movie. Not to mention adding humor, lines during shooting. It’s endless.”
Jared Leto has talked openly and let fans know what’s up with all of his cut scenes. After Leto let the cat out of the bag, Ayer has also spoken openly about the film and his mistakes. He admitted that his biggest regret was not making Joker the main villain in the film. Yeah, that could’ve been pretty juicy and a nice internal subplot for Harley. We’ll see what gets screwed up…oh we mean what happens, with the sequel that’s currently in development. Hopefully, they finally give fans what they want and give us the original darker Suicide Squad we all wanted and not fluff up Joker and Harley’s abusive relationship.
