Since its December opening, Aquaman, much like Wonder Woman before it, has reinvigorated the long-suffering DCEU post-Justice League and has replaced The Dark Knight Rises as the top-grossing DC film of all time. With these facts in mind, Warner Bros. Pictures wants Director James Wan, the man whose approach made it all possible, to return for a sequel.
So why is Wan hesitant?
According to sources, Wan is awaiting a suitable script before he can begin on the next chapter in the saga of the Atlantean King of the Seven Seas.
Currently, Aquaman has grossed a very impressive $1.1 billion worldwide, surpassing DC’s previous record holder, The Dark Knight Rises, which had made $1.08 billion back in 2012, right before the DCEU kicked off.
It will be interesting to see how this planned sequel, the upcoming Shazam! and Patty Jenkins’s WW1984 fit together after Warner Bros.’ decision to make their superhero projects director-focused and not follow the linear shared universe approach.
