DC Comics tweeted the cover to the upcoming Batman Elseworlds tale by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo on their official account yesterday.

Snyder and Capullo – famous for their arc that took The Dark Knight from the early days of The New 52 to the Dark Nights: Metal saga in the DC Rebirth era – return to Batman’s world to put the World’s Greatest Detective in a post-apocalyptic setting where the rules had not only been changed, but never been.

The official – and revised – synopsis reads as follows:

“Bruce Wayne wakes up in Arkham Asylum. Young. Sane. And…he was never Batman. So begins this sprawling tale of the Dark Knight as he embarks on a quest through a devastated DC landscape featuring a massive cast of familiar faces from the DC Universe. As he tries to piece together the mystery of his past, he must unravel the cause of this terrible future and track down the unspeakable force that destroyed the world as he knew it. This could be the last Batman story ever told.”

The first issue is due to hit the shelves on May 29th under DC’s black label, meaning graphic violence and mature themes are sure to be found in this soul-shattering tale of one of DC’s greatest superheroes. If the image of Batman in silhouette carrying a severed Joker head ala Green Lantern Battery style doesn’t say gruesome, feel free to offer suggestions, fans.
