It seems Matt Ryan can’t get enough of Constantine. Ryan originally began playing the character in the short-lived NBC series, Constantine. But even after it was cancelled, he appeared once again as the character on Arrow before becoming a series regular on DC Legends of Tomorrow.
Ryan also voiced the character in the animated film Justice League Dark and again in the CW Seed animated series Constantine. The series was later compiled into a feature film called Constantine: City of Demons.
The latest word is that Warner Bros. is currently developing a new Constantine series and they want Matt Ryan back as the character. But that still isn’t enough for Ryan.
Ryan recently spoke about his hopes of appearing in the DC Universe original series, Swamp Thing.
John Constantine was born in Swamp Thing. Eventually, he has to be on Swamp Thing, and I just hope it’s me… I’m still playing this role four years after Constantine was cancelled, so I must be doing something right.
It isn’t clear if the Constantine series being developed by Warner Bros. is for the DC Universe streaming service, but it would seem likely. Warner Bros. wants to get those subscriptions up and the best way to do that is with more original content. If it is meant for the streaming service, it would only stand to reason that he would appear in Swamp Thing. It would even be a safe bet to assume an episode of Swamp Thing would act as a soft pilot for a spin-off Constantine series, much like Titans did with Doom Patrol. If that does happen, the real questions will be, is the Arrowverse part of the DC Universe universe? Will they explain it as him somehow travelling the multiverse to another part of the DCU? Or, will they intentionally overlook it altogether?
