Summary
Things are not going well for Team Nightwing, or Bludhaven. Rolling blackouts continue to plague the city, rioters and looters are seizing the opportunity.
But that’s not even the worst part of it! Zak Edwards, or Nightwing Blue is gravely injured by the menacing Talon!
As if that wasn’t bad enough, Talon is now with the person Ric cares most about; Bea!
Positives
I usually start by talking about the writing of each issue. But honestly, it was the artwork that jumped out at me this issue. It really gives me a detective noir vibe, and I love it! That sort of aesthetic really suits Bludhaven, especially with what it’s going through right now.
Cliquet lends his unique art to the comic and so far I like it a lot! He does a fantastic job with both the character pieces and the action scenes! I mean, just look at the panels below and you can see the tempo change.
Jurgens is doing a brilliant job at writing Talon into the story. He’s truly terrifying, he’s smart and ruthless. While Ric has been taking things lightly recently. I feel like this might just be the shock to the system that he might need to become the Nightwing we all miss.
Negatives
I really hope they don’t kill off Zak! Or any of the Team Nightwing for that matter. Give them a mini-series. Hell ditch the Team Nightwing, and let them be allies to Nightwing in Bludhaven. Like Jim Gordon is to Batman in Gotham.
It’s really my only gripe, that these side characters aren’t explored further. The members of Ric’s new life need to be fleshed out some more, especially Bea. As much as I like her, I feel like we still barely know anything about her. She’s the most important person to our title character, explore that. Show us why. Let us follow them for a day, just a regular day while Team Nightwing are dealing with whatever threat Bludhaven has next.
Flesh out the side characters as Ric gets to know them more. Take us on the same journey he’s going on, trying to find his new place in the world.
Verdict
Nightwing #64 was another great issue. Jurgens is slowly showing the threat that Talon possesses.
Next issue could be the conclusion of the Talon story, although I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of him later. I could be completely wrong however, and Jurgens could pull another couple of issues from this story arc.
Stunning artwork with brilliant writing. Nightwing is heading in a very good direction. Those that stopped reading after the change of hands are missing out!
