‘Joker’ Passes $1 Billion at the Box Office and on the second anniversary of the release of Justice League to boot.
In its seventh weekend in theaters, Joker continues its box office domination by raking in $316 million in domestic gross and a global total of $998 million and its only Friday here in the U.S. Â This means that by the end of the weekend, Joker will become the first R-rated movie to pass $1 billion dollars.
With this news, Joker will become the second movie from Warner Bros/DC to pass $1 billion dollars as Aquaman made $1.048 billion early in 2019.
Not only is Joker the most profitable comic book movie ever made (62.5 million to make the film) but it is also historic since it wasn’t even released in China.
Through the history of cinema, China has played a very large role in the overall success of movies. Â Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned $123 million of its $2 billion dollar gross because of the Chinese fanbase. Â The likes of Captain Marvel ($154 out of $1.05 billion), Aquaman ($298 million out of 41.14 billion) and Spider-Man: Far From Home ($200 million out of $1.13 billion) all got a push over the $1 billion make because of the Chinese audience.
The fact that China was not and will not be involved in the financial box office success of Joker is what makes all of this so remarkable. Â If Joker had been released in China, well, who knows what kinds of heights it could have reached (maybe even the highest grossing movie of all time) status.
No matter what, the bottom line is that Joker will be over $1 billion dollars and will be the first ever R-rated movie to do so; Â Oh, and it is the most profitable comic book movie ever made. Â No big deal…
