You read that headline right, folks, after yesterday’s tease from James Gunn, WB has officially dropped the brand-new red band trailer for the upcoming reboot/sequel (requel?), THE SUICIDE SQUAD!

And boy, is it packed full of action, swearing, and a giant creature from outer space. Check it out below:

As we see, the trailer starts off with the team on the way to save Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). It looks like they’ve already been through some sh**, as they aren’t wearing their costumes and Bloodsport (Idris Elba) looks to have a chest wound of some sort. But, as it turns out, Harley managed to get herself out somehow in a very humorous opening scene for this trailer.

We then get to see some new characters like Michael Rooker’s Savant, Sean Gunn’s Weasel, and a fantastic shot of King Shark (being voiced by Sylvester Stallone) eating a guy. These characters look great and I can’t wait to see what Gunn does with them all.

I did notice, however, that we only got a quick glimpse of Mongal, Javelin, and T.D.K. (all three in the group shot, and another shot of T.D.K. drinking a Pibb), which bummed me out because I was really hoping to see a bit more of all of them, particularly Mongal. But maybe we’ll get more in the next trailer.

There’s a great scene with Peter Capaldi’s The Thinker, and he looks phenomenal. The back and forth walking of the characters gives the scene a real dynamic presence, and Harley’s ability to bring a chuckle to a seemingly serious moment can never be overlooked.

The funniest part of the whole trailer for me was the jungle scene where Bloodsport and Peacemaker (John Cena) are going back and forth and Bloodsport tells Peacemaker to “eat a bag of d***s.” I was laughing so hard throughout that scene, I had to rewind it to make sure I heard everything, and then laughed again.

The shot of King Shark effortlessly ripping a dude in half was epic and reminiscent of the Harley Quinn animated series. And if you haven’t watched that show yet, finish reading this article and go watch it!!

And then we get to see the big bad of the movie… STARRO!!!

I was flipping out during this. We see a couple shots of his tentacles, but then we get a quick, full body shot, and it is glorious!

And the use of the Steely Dan song “Dirty Work” fit perfectly! So, needless to say, I loved this trailer for The Suicide Squad and can’t wait to see the movie.

In The Suicide Squad, welcome to hell — a.k.a. Bell Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out — even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and everyone’s favorite pyscho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.

The Suicide Squad will see the return of Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Colonel Rick Flag, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang from 2016’s Suicide Squad. Joining them in the film are David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Steve Agee as King Shark, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Flula Borg as Javelin, Mayling Ng as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Michael Rooker as Savant, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, and Sean Gunn as Weasel.

The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
