Tom Welling may not be done with Clark Kent after all.
Tom Welling Actually Suiting Up…Could it Happen?
The Smallville actor recently expressed in an interview an interest in returning to the role, this time in costume and in the world of Matt Reeve’s The Batman. In fact, his foot is already in the door considering he’s already friends with Reeves’s lead, Robert Pattison.
“[I] think that would be cool, ” Welling said. “My buddy Rob Pattison, he’s going to be the new Batman. I would love it. It would be fun to be the Superman that shows up in his movie, just because he is a friend of mine. Yeah, who knows?”
Welling portrayed Clark Kent for ten seasons on the Superman prequel series, but never did he suit up. Even in the finale, shots of Clark in costume were either a CGI character from afar, or just Welling opening up his shirt. Tom had emphasized back then he never wanted to wear the costume, as he was not playing Superman, but rather Clark Kent. The grounded “no tights, no flights” mantra had carried the series until Clark had left high school behind and actual DC heroes made their appearances. Truth be told, a great many fans felt let down that they never saw Clark in full costume. The closest was the spinoff DC Comics series Smallville: Season Eleven which picked up where the finale left off.
Then, the unimaginable happened in 2019. Welling reprised his role in a cameo in the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths alongside Erica Durance‘s Lois Lane. However, his version of Clark, after spending years as Superman, was in a different place now. He had given up his powers, hung up the cape, and retired back to the Kent Farm with Lois to raise their daughters. Even though he got to give Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor a solid right cross, fans felt cheated. Again.
If the long-delayed film – set to debut in March 2022 – is successful, could Smallville fans finally see Tom as the fully-formed Man of Steel? Time will tell.
