Being an avid fan of conventions myself, I’m not sure if I can put into words how happy I am to return to the scene after a lengthy pandemic-induced hiatus. You can most likely relate yourself, as this writer last attended a show in February of 2020 – but pop culture fans residing in the Metro Detroit area have a lot to look forward to this weekend.
I am, of course, talking about Astronomicon 4.
For those unfamiliar, Astronomicon is an event based in southeast Michigan that originated back in 2018. Blending fandoms such as comic books, science fiction, horror, pro wrestling, and music, it’s attracted much attention since its inception. And it keeps growing each year.
Previously, the show took place out in Sterling Heights, but this year’s shindig has moved to the Sheraton Ann Arbor in – where else? – Ann Arbor, Michigan. And as usual, it’ll go down Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (August 20-22), so plan accordingly.
When it comes to celebrity guests, I must say that I’m most looking forward to meeting Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour fame. Hey, I’ve been a Slipknot fan since 1999, so you could say I’ve waited more than half my life for an opportunity like this.
In addition to that awesomeness, actors such as Shannon Elizabeth (American Pie), Dana DeLorenzo (Ash vs. Evil Dead), Jason Mewes (Clerks), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th film series) and Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects) are among those in attendance. And as for wrestlers, legends like Mick Foley and Mickie James join current AEW stars Darby Allin, Tay Conti, and Sammy Guevara to round out the bill. Veteran commentator Tony Schiavone will stop by as well, but I assume he’s not going to have to call any high flying action.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Astronomicon without the guys in Twiztid, who’ll be there all weekend and will bring fellow recording artists such as Blaze, Boondox, and many others along for the ride. And be sure to check out booths set up by locally based comic book creators like Dirk Manning and William Messner-Loebs while you’re there.
