Aquaman 2 is underway, and lead Jason Mamoa debuts a new look that symbolizes the sequel’s distinct tone.
Aquaman 2 – New Suit, Same Old Arthur, New Direction
Mamoa, who stars as new Atlantean king Arthur Curry/Aquaman, posted on Instagram two photos: One in his traditional orange-and-green suit, the other a new, darker suit. “Second round, ” he captioned. “New suit. More action. #aquaman Aloha j.” You can find the photos on the link down below. He also hinted that Arthur’s hair will look more blonde than in the first film.
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom has begun principal photography under returning director James Wan. Whereas the first film received fanfare for its dazzling visuals and lightheartedness, the filmmaker behind The Conjuring and Saw seeks to take the audience to darker shadows.
No stranger to horror, the Saw filmmaker credits Planet of The Vampires as his inspiration. Wan explains the contradiction in tone to the first film was deliberate.
“[The audience] were not familiar with the comic book, which deals in this very lurid, strange world. People were taken aback that I didn’t throw all that stuff away and make a dark, heavy film. But I didn’t feel that would have been right for it. [This time] I feel it will be easier for people to accept where we go because I’ve already laid the foundation.”
As fans remember, the Lost Kingdom is a branch of Atlantis that devolved into mindless cannibalistic creatures after the Great Cataclysm. This mutation caused an appearance of large, humanoid piranhas. Known collectively as “The Trench,” these creatures have dwelled in darkness for centuries, causing a sensitivity to light. Upon acquiring King Atlan’s trident, Arthur’s powers were enhanced. One of those powers in particular: Telepathic control over all sea life, including The Trench, which aided him in his final battle with half-brother Orm/Ocean Master.
Besides Mamoa, returning stars include Amber Heard as love interest Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Dolph Lundgren as King Meerus, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta.
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom is due for release December 16, 2022.
