This year’s DC FanDome event offered so much for everyone, from big blockbuster films, to video games, and several TV shows.  Well, two of those shows are coming at you from acclaimed director Ava DuVernay, DMZ and Naomi.

DuVernay will serve as executive producer alongside Roberto Patino, and they dropped by DC FanDome to share details and insights into DMZ, the four-part HBO Max limited series adaptation of the acclaimed Vertigo series by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli. The series tells the story about a civil war between the secessionist Free States of America and the United States of America and the DMZ that exists between them, where an outsider (Rosario Dawson) comes in to turn things upside down. While Dawson is playing a new character named Alma, Patino revealed that she was inspired by Zee Hernandez, the former medical student who attempted to aid the citizens of the DMZ in the book. DuVernay described the series as set in a world just a few years into the future that asks what we’d be if we let the worst of our divisions get the better of us. In short, the creative guardrails are off in this new live action series also starring Benjamin Bratt and Hoon Lee.

DMZ doesn’t have an official release date yet, but we can expect to see it on HBO Max sometime in 2022.

And as I said, DuVernay isn’t only working on DMZ, as she is also serving as the executive producer of the upcoming CW series Naomi, based on the bestselling comic book from Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell. Star Kaci Walfall dropped by the Hall of Heroes to chat with Candice Patton about the upcoming series and showed a clip—featuring a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo—from the pilot episode.

Ava DuVernay is joined on this series by Jill Blankenship (Arrow), and starring Kaci Walfall in the titular role, Naomi follows the journey of a cool, confident, comic book–loving teenager as she pursues her hidden destiny. As Naomi journeys to the heights of the Multiverse in search of answers, what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.

Look for Naomi to debut on The CW in 2022.
