Sometimes, there isn’t enough to say for a complete review, but there is still something to be said. That’s what Quick Takes is about. It would be difficult to review EVERY comic I read in a week, but I’ll always have something to say. So, here’s to something new…Quick Takes for the Week of December 18, 2024.  Be sure to comment on what you’re reading and enjoying this week and check out the full reviews for the week at DC Comics News!

Plastic Man No More #4

The final issue of this mini-series is out this week.  Why does DC allow writers to tell stories that devalue their characters?  Jack Cole must be rolling over in his grave.  Let’s respect one of the all-time great creator’s and one of the only non-Marvel/ DC characters from the Golden Age with any kind of  recognizability.  The Justice League don’t fare well either.  What’s the point of writing characters you don’t like?

Wonder Woman #16 (Legacy #816)

Tom King is still under the impression that readers care about The Sovereign.  I would really hope and expect a Wonder Woman comic to be about Wonder Woman.  This series is still about The Sovereign.  Detective Chimp makes the whole things seem ridiculous in this issue.  As if King’s narration couldn’t get any worse on this series.   Nobody cares about The Sovereign or Trinity.  C’mon, DC.  Wonder Woman fans are suffering mightily, but damn, Bruno Redondo’s art in this issue is gorgeous.  How a such a boring comic sells this well, I’ll never know.

Challengers of the Unknown #1

This first issue feels like a mixed bag.  I know why it’s connected so heavily to the Justice League, but I can’t help thinking that it would be better unassociated.  There are some ideas in the story that are pretty interesting, mainly what Ace discovers on Mars.  That it’s so connected to Darkseid and the events of DC All In Special #1 feels limiting.  DC is counting on it as a selling point, but I think there’s enough “character” hinted at that the Challengers don’t need a JL liaison for their missions or their raison d’ etre as the disappearance of Darkseid from the JL satellite.

Batman/ Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #4

Last years Batman/ Santa Claus: Silent Knight was a fun winter romp and this years offering is much the same.  There’s some Christmas, some pagan custom and magic, and a broad selection of DC Comics characters.  It may not be a traditional Christmas with the Super-Heroes story, but it’s a fun, seasonally inspired adventure.  Probably a good idea to go back and read last year’s as well.
