Merry Christmas!

Sometimes, there isn’t enough to say for a complete review, but there is still something to be said. That’s what Quick Takes is about. It would be unbelievably time consuming to review EVERY comic I read in a week, but I’ll always have something to say. So, here’s to something new…Quick Takes for the Week of December 25, 2024. Be sure to comment on what you’re reading and enjoying this week and check out the full reviews for the week at DC Comics News!

Black Canary: Best of the Best #2

A lot of same problems with issue #1 are present here as well.  The narration is so dense and unnecessary it’s more effective as a knock out that one of Lady Shiva’s punches.  The best parts are Dinah’s memories of being a child and looking up to her mother, the original Black Canary- even if we’ve seen this sort of thing before.  The biggest problem is the notion that the fight makes no sense, there are no stakes, there no reason Shiva and Black Canary’s fighting styles should be known by the commentator’s like they’re professional boxers.  The basic premise makes no sense.  Why is this fight happening?  Ryan Sook’s art pops this issue, though and is definitely a draw- just don’t read the words.

Metamorpho the Element Man #1

Al Ewing channels the Silver Age for this inaugural issue and Steve Lieber makes it look great!  Even some of the lettering choices by Ferran Delgado are reminiscent of that era, especially the caption box on page 1.  It’s not just the storytelling style that has a throwback feel, but the dialogue and plot are very 1960’s.  It’s got that espionage/ undercover element with a swingin’ ’60’s feel- like groovy.  It might be a bit niche in this respect.  Overall, a fun and enjoyable read and if you like the throwback vibe, you’ll really dig this one!

Batman/ Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #5

It’s appropriate that this mini-series concludes on Christmas Day as Santa and the Justice League share some gifts.  It’s another fun issue that does the most with “comic book” fun.  It may not be at the top of your reading stack this week, but it’s entertaining and a holiday treat that only comes once a year.

Justice League Unlimited #2

A solid follow up to issue #1!  Mark Waid spends bit of time reintroducing the reader to DC’s first hero- (no, not Superman), Dr. Occult!  It’s nice to see him in this issue.  The ideas introduced last issue are expanded upon and things get a little less clear as there are more surprises for the Justice League to delve into.  This story also gives readers a taste of what the The Atom Project will be like, as Ryan and Ray get Atom Smasher back his powers.  This is going to go bigger and epic.  It generates some excitement which some of the other titles launched out of the DC All In Special have been unable to do.
