DC Comics Quick Takes for the Week of January 15, 2025

Sometimes, there isn’t enough to say for a complete review, but there is still something to be said. That’s what Quick Takes is about. It would be difficult to review EVERY comic I read in a week, but I’ll always have something to say. So, here’s to something new…Quick Takes for the Week of January 15, 2025. Be sure to comment on what you’re reading and enjoying this week and check out the full reviews for the week at DC Comics News!  What books are you reading this week from DC Comics!

Green Lantern: Fractured Spectrum #1

Jeremy Adams began planting seeds for his Green Lantern run way back in issue #1Green Lantern: Fractured Spectrum #1 picks up seeds he’s been dropping over the course of the run.  If Green Lantern #18 was the end of the first epic, then this is the start of the second one.  Fans of Green Lantern won’t want to miss the start of this next chapter.  It all feels natural and makes sense.  Adams does just enough with character and V. Ken Marion’s dynamic artistic style fits the Green Lantern concept wonderfully.  The Jeremy Adams era of Green Lantern just keeps rolling!

Action Comics #1082

There are high and lows in this issue.  The first couple pages with Superman in action and the last two pages when Clark Kent is mugged in an alley are the highs.  The middle of the issue meanders about as John Ridley unsuccessfully attempts to get the reader interested in the reasons Major Disaster has gone bad…again.  There may be a story here, and there may be an interesting angle for Clark Kent to explore in terms of his outlook on life and the power of hope, but this issue is not convincing.  Throw in some weird dialogue with Lois and Clark as she refers to Clark in the third person and a bizarre comment about his view of the bedroom as a “no judgement” zone and this already feels like a weird start to a Superman story.

Catwoman #72

This issue evokes a unique vibe not seen in regular superhero comic today.  It gives European espionage feel, think Diabolik or Modesty Blaise.  Selina can fit into that sort of world.  There have been many iterations of Selina’s past and the “differentness” is pretty interesting.  It actually works that the somewhat awkward new costume makes her unrecognizable to the family she’s sort of returned to.  The art is also a bit different with an indie feel that contributes to the overall feel of the strip.  This issue is a pleasant surprise and offers something a little different and it feels refreshing in that sense.

Batman/ Superman: World’s Finest #35

This series has been one of DC’s best since its inception, and Mark Waid delivers the goods again with this issue.  Not only do we get a team up with Aquaman, but also an appearance by Lori Lemaris.  Waid knows how to reference DC’s history!  There are some Silver Age beats here, and they are downright fun.  There’s a great homage to the cover of Brave and the Bold #28, the first appearance of the Justice League of America and themes that fit well with Aquaman’s character.  There’s a good deal of fun in this issue as well as the set up for a good story.  Through it all Waid also delivers accurate character moments.  This continues to be a top title for DC Comics!
