DC Comics Quick Takes for the Week of February 12, 2025
A new Green Lantern Corps title debuts this week! Are you checking it out? What else are you reading? There’s not always time for a full review, but you know I’ve probably got something to say! That’s what the Quick Takes of the week are for! Here are three DC Comics from the week of February 12, 2025. Be sure to check out the regular reviews here at DC Comics News!
Green Lantern Corps #1
This debut issue is great. It catches up readers on the Lanterns and their current status. We get John Stewart, Jessica Cruz and surprisingly, Sinestro featured! There are appearances from Jo Mullein, Teen Lantern and Simon Baz. Jeremy Adams incorporates a lot of history as well as getting things going with the Sorrow Lantern. Brining Sinestro back into the Corps is an interesting idea and it’s done wonderfully in this issue. There are lots of little bits that make this a great issue. Only one thing stands out as a possible concern…is that Shayera (Hawkwoman) Hol on the last page? She’s on Oa as a royal ambassador to work with John Stewart to help salvage what’s left of their homeworld. It doesn’t look like Shayera’s hair color. Her body language and facial expression certainly indicate she has history with John, and John doesn’t want it to be her. As the kids say, she looks thirsty. Unfortunately, it appears that Adams is trying to incorporate the DC Animated Universe relationship between John and the random Thanagarian Hawkgirl from that show with a name that never made sense. This would be a huge mistake…. The DCAU was very unkind to the Hawks and there’s no reason to make the same mistakes in the comics. Additionally, the status quo of Hawkman and Hawkwoman established at the end of Robert Venditti’s Hawkman series was both elegant and beautiful and it just doesn’t make sense that Shayera would show up looking “thirsty” for John Stewart. Since Fernando Pasarin drew that Hawkman issue as well, you’d think he could’ve pointed out that something’s not right! Ok, it’s a small concern for this issue, but a huge concern moving forward for Shayera.
Black Lightning #4
This feels like a set up issue. There’s a lot of information, which is good if you haven’t read the first three issues of this series. The art really impresses in the first couple pages as Jefferson Pierce takes a couple swings at Superman. Jefferson Pierce as a father is a solid idea and seeing his concern for his children is something different. It feels like the issue is too concerned with the mechanics and doesn’t get enough of the emotion that could be in this issue. The high concept of this series seems like it’s wasting Black Lightning who could be doing something a lot cooler and exciting. It makes sense that he would want to help kids, but it just feels like something is missing from the piece of this puzzle.
Batman and Robin #18
This is another outstanding issue in this series. While the mystery and action are engaging, exciting and fun- I literally leaned forward more and more as I read- it’s the emotional beats between Batman and Damian and Batman and Jason Todd that stand out. The art is also great. This has got to be one of the best of all the Bat-titles right now. It’s much deeper and grounded than Absolute Batman, there’s no weirdness like in Batman and it’s got a serious tone that may just elevate it over Batman and Robin: Year One. This is the Batman comic you should be reading. Phillip Kennedy Johnson is knocking it out of the park!
