DC Comics Quick Takes for the Week of June 18, 2025

Here’s a selection of new DC Comics from this week…

Zatanna #5

This series continues to be fun and overall enjoyable.  However, if you don’t recall EXACTLY where you were at the end of issue #4, this issue starts out in a confusing spot and it takes a while to catch up, and still one should go back and reread to get everything out of Jamal Campbell’s script.  There’s a neat fourth wall moment of sorts that is also related to Animal Man meeting writer Grant Morrison in an issue.  Things intensify at the end and set up the story for next issue’s conclusion.  There’s also a nice reference to Zatanna’s first appearance in Hawkman #4 and the longer story it kicked off- Zatanna’s Search.

Titans #24

This series is definitely a sleeper, but you shouldn’t sleep on it!  John Layman has really brought the excitement and natural group feel back to The Titans.  The story he’s telling is a nice mix of old and new.  This group of Titans has a long history together and there’s a lot to play with and Layman has found a way to pick on the right scabs.  There’s a wonderful balance of character and action, and he includes the right amount of exposition that the reader can figure out what’s going on without feeling lost (see above).

Nightwing #127

After a two-issue story that feels like an intermission, Nightwing #127 appears to get things back on track and it’s clear at this point that Dan Watters is settling in for a longer form story.  The Zanni, Olivia Pearce and the return of … well, I won’t spoil that, suffice to say that things are going to be a little weird even if the overall direction of Nightwing seems to be course corrected at this point.  The interaction between Babs and Dick stands out as the best part of the issue and reminds the reader that their relationship is the foundation of this title.
